Marine outboard 4-stroke maintenance (Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki)

Modern 4-stroke outboards (Yamaha F-series, Mercury Verado, Suzuki DF-series) dominate the tender and center-console market. Service intervals: (1) After first 20 hours (break-in): oil and oil filter change, gearcase oil check. Skipping the break-in service voids most warranties. (2) Every 100 hours or annually: oil and oil filter, spark plugs, fuel filter, water pump impeller inspection, gearcase oil change, anode inspection. (3) Every 300 hours: valve adjustment, thermostat inspection, full inspection of injectors and throttle body. (4) Every 500 hours: timing chain inspection (Verado), belt inspection (Yamaha F250/F300), full flush and cooling system service. Key rules: (a) Flush after EVERY salt-water run with the earmuff flush attachment. Salt residue in the cooling passages destroys aluminum from the inside in a season. (b) Fuel: use ethanol-free 90 octane when available (E10 damages older marine fuel systems, though most post-2015 outboards handle E10 fine). Add stabilizer (Star Tron, Mercury Quickare) if the tank sits more than 3 weeks. (c) Gearcase oil: check the color at every service, milky white = water intrusion (bad shaft seal, requires seal replacement immediately), black/burnt = internal damage. (d) Anodes on the lower unit and transom mount: inspect every haul-out, replace at 50 percent. (e) Store the engine vertical or tilted UP so the cooling passages drain, storing tilted down traps water in the cylinders and cracks the block if frozen. Winter storage: fog the engine (spray oil into the intake at idle until it stalls) and drain all fuel from the carbs on carbureted models; fuel-injected models just need stabilizer.
