Rigid inflatable boat (RIB) tube care and fabric types

RIB tenders (Zodiac, AB, Highfield, Novurania, Williams Jet Tenders) use one of three tube fabrics, each with different maintenance profiles. (1) HYPALON (chlorosulfonated polyethylene, CSM): premium marine fabric, 15-25 year lifespan, resists UV, ozone, chemicals, and abrasion. Warm to touch even in sun (dark blue absorbs). Repairable with Hypalon adhesive (Bostik 2402 or equivalent) and a proper Hypalon patch. Expensive: RIB with Hypalon tubes costs 30-50 percent more than PVC. (2) PVC (polyvinyl chloride): budget marine fabric, 5-10 year lifespan in tropical conditions, degrades faster under UV. Cheaper repairs (PVC glue readily available) but the material itself doesn't handle chemicals or gasoline spills well. (3) NEOPRENE / EPDM: hybrid, some manufacturers use it as an interim. Care rules for all three: (a) Rinse with fresh water after every salt exposure. Salt crystals abrade the fabric. (b) Do NOT use household cleaners with alcohol, acetone, or petroleum solvents, they dissolve the fabric. Use marine-specific tube cleaners (303 Tube Cleaner is the standard). (c) UV protectant: apply 303 Aerospace Protectant monthly in tropical service, quarterly in temperate. (d) Pressure: check monthly with a pressure gauge (specific to your model, typically 3.4-3.6 psi). Under-inflation stresses seams; over-inflation stresses the fabric in heat. Inflate cold, allow for expansion in the sun. (e) Storage: never store rolled if you can avoid it, creates permanent fold lines that eventually crack. Deflate and roll only for long-term winter storage.
